SEO, PPC, Analytics

In today’s blogpost I would like to talk about Search Engine Optimisation.

First thing first, what is a search engine?

SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” search results on search engines. (Searchengineland.com)

SEOs has been a long time favourite way of marketing by firms. Why? Due to the results of course. As the name suggests, it means finding ways to appear onto Google’s search results to gain top spot on suggested site for users.

Just bringing google in to show how many searches they get per year.

So many 0s! Must be a mistake! Uh I KID YOU NOT. Google processes roughly 40,000 search queries EVERY SECOND on average. Which means 3.5 searches a day and 1.2 TRILLION searches per yer world wide.

It may sound really attractive for firms because there are huge opportunities. And all these can be achieved just by optimising search engines. Best part, it doesn’t cost a thing.

Firms used to spam keywords and click on their sites to gain the “number 1 searched website”, climbing against countless of competitors to be the suggested website for that specific result. Lazy people like me, usually just click on the first link that pops out. Imagine if the world had 40 million lazy mes’ how much would that company earn?

However, with the ever evolving and change that Google makes, firms can no longer call in on “extra help” to spam on the search engine and help them rise to the top. “Black hat methods” are no longer available.

In my opinion, I don’t think it’s smart to just rely on SEOs. Firms should instead work on their content and stop wasting time and effort on such methods.

What do you think? Let me know in the comment section below!

  1. Thanks for sharing Sara! I totally agree with you that firms should not over-relying on SEO and that they should always stay updated with trends around the globe! I think utilizing media search tools like picture search or video search may be a great idea to enhance reaches! What do you think?

    1. Hmm that’s a very tough question. I’m still on the fence about picture search or video search. Pictures are something that are extremely easy to steal online. A lot of investigators actually use pictures to track where the picture was taken and where it was originally from. Only about 5% of the time, pictures come back with a match. So I think 95% risk of not being able to be tracked is an extremely huge one to take.
